Pchum Ben, this year occurring at the end of September, is one of the most important the annual traditional festivals. Together with Khmer New Year in April, Pchum Ben is the most important festival in the Khmer religious calendar. Cambodians have faithfully observed the festival every year for as long as anyone can remember.
It is believed that during Pchum Ben, souls and spirits come to receive offerings from their living relatives. During this holiday everyone goes to a local pagoda to provide offerings to the monks. By doing this, Cambodians show respect for their ancestors.
M’Lop Tapang believes that it is important for children to learn about their culture and traditions and each year invites local monks to visit our Education Center as part of the Pchum Ben celebrations. Our Community Shelter located in one of the poorer neighborhoods of the city also hosts Pchum Ben festivities that allow the neighborhood there a place to gather and celebrate.
